Study Shows Goji Berry Juice Improves Well-Being

December 8th, 2008

People who drank goji berry juice for two weeks experienced improvements in several measures of overall physical and psychological well-being, in a study funded and conducted by the goji berry juice company FreeLife International and published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Researchers assigned 35 healthy adults to consume 120 milliliters of either FreeLife GoChi juice or a similarly colored and flavored placebo for two weeks. This followed a two-week washout period, during which participants had not consumed any dietary supplements, energy drinks, green tea, or products containing goji berries.

Both at the beginning and end of the study, participants were asked to rate their general feelings of well-being, their neurological and psychological states, and any health problems including those of the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal or musculoskeletal systems.

After two weeks, eighty percent of participants in the berry juice group reported improved sleep quality, 50 to 60 percent reported improved feelings of contentment, happiness and good health, and 50 percent reported increased athletic performance and energy and decreased fatigue. There were also significant improvements in calmness, ability to focus on activities, and gastrointestinal function.

Non-significant verbally reported benefits included healthier skin, harder nails, an increase in sexual activity and performance, and a decrease in menstrual pain.

Participants in the placebo group reported a significant increase in feelings of happiness and a significant change in heartburn frequency.

Goji berries have been used in the traditional medicinal practices of China and other Asian countries for more than 2,500 years to improve the health of the eyes, kidney and liver and to fight the effects of aging. The current study is the first outside of China to scientifically examine the effects of goji berry juice consumption. The amount of juice used was equivalent to 150 grams of fresh fruit, the same amount recommended in traditional Chinese medicine.

6 Ways to Reduce Inflammation — Without a Statin Drug

December 8th, 2008

statins, drugs, prescription drugs, pharmaceuticals, crestor, cholesterol, inflammation, heart disease, heart attack, stroke, deceit, deception, manipulationExperts predict that as a result of the so-called JUPITER study, which seemed to show that the statin drug Crestor lowers the risk of heart attacks and strokes in those with high levels of inflammation, will lead to millions of people being put on statin drugs.

But the benefits were actually tiny – about 0.72 percent of the statin takers in the trial had a heart attack or stroke, compared with 1.5 percent of those taking placebos.

Instead of a statin drug that comes with dangerous side effects, try these six measures instead:

    1. Stop smoking. Smoking hardens the arteries and increase inflammation. But research shows you can reverse all the damaging effects to your arteries within 10 years of quitting.
    2. Think olive oil, fish, and nuts. People who stick with a Mediterranean-style diet based on fruits, vegetables, nuts, and olive oil can lower their levels of inflammation. It works by increasing the amount of foods you eat that are rich in omega-3 fats, which fight inflammation.
    3. Get active. Exercise a great way to lower inflammation without any of the side effects associated with medications.
    4. Shrink your waist size. If you’re a woman with a waist measurement of over 35 inches or a man with a waist of over 40 inches, you probably have high inflammation. Whittling a few inches off the waist by reducing your portions and increasing activity can go a long way toward solving that problem.
    5. Get enough sleep. A new study shows that elderly people with high blood pressure who sleep less than 7.5 hours a night have dramatically elevated chances of having a stroke or heart attack. Other research has shown that both too little and too much sleep increases inflammation. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine says most adults need between seven and eight hours of sleep each night.
    6. Reduce stress. High levels of stress hormones can lead to the release of excess inflammatory chemicals.

Manuka Honey Kills Resistant Superbug Bacteria that Antibiotics Can’t

July 23rd, 2008

(NaturalNews) A honey-based dressing for wounds is effective even on injuries that are resistant to antibiotics, according to New Jersey manufacturer Derma Sciences Inc.

The product, called Medihoney, is made from an absorbent material based on seaweed, and saturated with a variety of honey known as manuka, or Leptospermum, honey. The honey is produced by bees that have collected nectar from manuka and jelly bushes, which grow in Australia and New Zealand.

According to biochemist Peter Molan, who has researched natural antibiotics including honey for 25 years, manuka honey is effective at killing even the most antibiotic resistant bacteria even when it has been diluted to a tenth of its original concentration.

“There’s more evidence, clinical evidence, by far for honey in wound treatment than for any of the pharmaceutical products,” Molan said. He recommends it in particular for people with weak immune systems.

“It’s been used on wounds where nothing else will work,” he said.

Medihoney is already being used in hospitals, doctors’ offices and other medical settings in both North and South America. Similar products have been popular in Australia, New Zealand and Europe for more than 10 years.

The honey-based dressings are effective at absorbing fluids and killing germs for up to a week, making them ideal in settings where it is difficult to change dressings regularly. They also reduce inflammation and foul wound odors better than traditional, pharmaceutical-based dressings.

Emergency physician Craig Lambrecht said that he began using a manuka-honey based dressing to treat children with severe burns at a military clinic in Iraq last winter. The honey dressings soon became more popular with Iraqi families than conventional dressings because they were more natural and easier to use. In addition, Lambrecht found that the children treated with honey healed faster and experienced fewer complications than children treated with conventional dressings.

Licorice Root Extract: New Treatment for Canker Sores

July 23rd, 2008

(NaturalNews) What common oral condition appears as shallow ulcers of different sizes, affects one in five Americans, can be caused by food allergies and hormonal changes, and also can cause severe mouth pain? Commonly referred to as “canker sores,” recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU) now can be treated by an extract of licorice root, according to a study published in the March/April 2008 issue of General Dentistry.

The authors examined the effects of an over-the-counter medicated adhesive patch (with extract from the licorice root) for treatment of RAU versus no treatment. After seven days of treatment, ulcer size in the group who received the adhesive patch with licorice extract was significantly lower, while ulcer size in the no-treatment group had increased 13 percent.

Licorice root extract was used as a prescribed treatment for gastric ulcers until the 1970s, according to the study. In its original form, licorice root extract has a very strong taste. However, when combined with a self-adhering, time-release, dissolving oral patch, the taste is mild and pleasant.

Among the causes of canker sores, a genetic predisposition might be the biggest cause, says Michael Martin, DMD, PhD, lead author of the study. “When both parents have a history of canker sores, the likelihood of their children developing them can be as high as 90 percent,” he says

The most serious side effect of canker sores is sharp pain in the mouth, which can interfere with an individual’s quality of life and affect their eating, drinking or speech. Dr. Martin revealed that “in addition to speeding healing of the canker sores, the adhesive patch helped to reduce pain after just three days of treatment.”

Those who experience canker sores on a regular basis can visit their dentist for treatment techniques. “Dentists can give patients the proper medication and treatment options to seal the lesions, which will prevent further infection,” says Eric Shapira, DDS, MAGD, AGD spokesperson and expert on alternative medicine. “Also, increasing vitamins and other herbs, such as Vitamin C and zinc, can help treat canker sores because they help to regenerate tissue cells,” Dr. Shapira adds.

Common causes of canker sores:

* Local trauma and stress

* Diet and food allergies

* Hormonal changes

* Use of certain medications

Common treatments of canker sores:

* Antimicrobial mouthwashes

* Local painkillers

* Over-the-counter remedies (oral adhesive patches, liquids and gels)

Licorice root can be found in both tinctures and tablets. For easy use on canker sores, crush the tablet and mix with a bit of water to make a paste then apply to canker sores.

Honey Better Than Cough Medicine For Soothing Kids’ Cough Symptoms

July 21st, 2008

(NaturalNews) Honey is a more effective cough remedy for children than many over-the-counter medications, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the Penn State College of Medicine and published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

“Honey provided the greatest relief of symptoms compared with the other treatments,” lead researcher Ian Paul said.

Researchers studied 105 children between the ages of two and 18 who were having trouble sleeping due to cough. The participants were given either a small dose of buckwheat honey, honey-flavored dextromethorphan or no treatment at all a half-hour before bed.

Dextromethorphan is the primary cough-suppressant in most over-the-counter cough and cold medications.

Children who were given the honey had less frequent and severe nighttime coughing than either the children given dextromethorphan or those given no treatment at all. Honey appeared to induce a brief period of hyperactivity in the children, but even so both children and parents slept better after children were given honey compared with dextromethorphan or no treatment.

Honey has a long history of use as a treatment for upper respiratory symptoms, and research suggests that it also contains antioxidant and antifungal properties.

“The World Health Organization has cited honey as a potential therapy,” Paul said.

In contrast, the FDA recently advised against the use of over-the-counter cough and cold medications in children under the age of six, saying that such medications may cause dangerous side effects and have not been proven effective in that age group.

“With honey, parents now have a safe and effective alternative to use for children over age one who have cough and cold symptoms,” Paul said.

Paul warned that children under the age of one should not be given honey, as it may induce infant botulism in rare cases. He also noted that the experiment used dark honey, and it is not known if different varieties of honey would have the same effect.

How to Harvest Fresh Aloe Vera Gel

April 30th, 2008

First, start by cutting a large aloe vera leaf from a living plant. Be sure to thank the plant for granting you this nutritious gift, as we should always give thanks to nature for providing us with nourishment and natural medicine.

Pick a large aloe vera leaf that’s green and thick. The thicker the leaf, the more gel you’ll get. A healthy aloe vera leaf is about the size of your forearm. Always respect the plant and leave enough for the plant to survive and prosper. Never destroy an aloe vera plant to harvest its leaves unless, of course, you’re running an aloe vera farm and plan to re-plant it.

After cutting the leaf, let the dark red resin drain out by holding the leaf upside for several seconds until the resin drips out. The gel will stay in the leaf, so don’t worry about losing gel.

Notice the thick gel in this aloe vera leaf. (This was taken from a plant in my front yard.) It is this gel that we’re after. The method here is to use a knife to remove the thick skin and resin of the aloe vera leaf, leaving only the gel.

It is the gel that has the health benefits we’re interested in. The dark red resin (latex) actually causes diarrhea, but the gel is soothing to the entire digestive tract and is even well known to cure heartburn, IBS, Crohn’s disease, constipation and many other digestive disorders.
I’ve cut away a section of the leaf to show you the transparency of the aloe vera gel. Aloe vera gel is 96% water. The water is locked in a matrix of complex polysaccharides made of over 200 phytonutrients. It is these polysaccharides and glyconutrients that we’re interested in. This is where the healing benefits come from.

Here’s a closeup of the aloe vera leaf. You can clearly see the texture of the aloe vera gel vs. the skin. What’s impossible to see here, however, are the numerous healing elements present in aloe vera.

Simple Recipes for Children’s Cough, Cold and Flu Syrups

December 12th, 2007

honey

Wednesday, December 12, 2007 by: Leslee Dru Browning

Children’s cough syrups are easy to make and much safer and more effective than over-the-counter cough and cold remedies that were just removed from store shelves. Coughs in children are quite common. Sometimes they are caused by colds and flu, other times; allergies and sinus congestion. A cough that lingers for days or weeks, or becomes severe, should be checked by your child’s health care provider to rule out other illnesses.

Why use honey in cough syrups? more….

Organic Turmeric

September 4th, 2007

Traditionally used to purify the blood and provide relief for stomach problems, Turmeric offers many health benefits that either directly or indirectly promote a healthier liver and gallbladder. Offering strong antioxidant effects, Organic Turmeric (Curcuma longa) helps remove toxins from the body. As a result of this antioxidant effect, your liver does not have to work as hard to filter blood and keep your body healthy. This creates a healthier liver overall while also allowing it to focus on removing toxins within the body.

Health Benefits of Turmeric:

  • Helps flush out toxins to reduce strain on the liver
  • Reduces inflammation by lowering histamine levels
  • Supports bile production to break down fats for lower cholesterol
  • Promotes natural cleansing and protection of the liver
  • Separates platelets for improved blood circulation
  • Encourages the growth of digestive flora and discourages the growth of harmful bacteria

Research has shown that people who drink excessive amounts of alcohol (a behavior that can lead to severe liver damage) experienced less damage to the liver if they consumed regular doses of Turmeric. In fact, research suggests Organic Turmeric works by increasing production of several liver detoxification enzymes.

Turmeric Also Provides:

  • Vitamin B6
  • Iron
  • Potassium
  • Dietary Fiber
  • Manganese

A number of studies have taken place in India supporting Turmeric’s health benefits, including it ability to help fight liver inflammation and disease as a powerful antioxidant. Research has indicated the curcuminoids (phytonutrients) contained within Turmeric are primarily responsible for this anti-inflammatory effect. Turmeric is one of the ingredients in curry, which is widely consumed in India and other countries, and this may help explain the lower incidence of liver disease and cancer in those societies.

Peppermint

August 27th, 2007

Peppermint Today peppermint is grown in Europe and the U.S. It was originally found in London in 1750 and is a hybrid of spearmint and water mint. High oil content is found in the stems and leaves of the plant. These parts are used medicinally.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is often used for digestion purposes in oil form. The oil is also used to treat problems including cramps, gastritis, motion sickness, and irritable bowl syndrome.

The gastrointestinal tract is often relieved by peppermint as it relaxes the intestinal wall’s muscles. As it increases saliva, swallowing increases and relieves cramps, improves appetite, and relieves pain from motion sickness, nausea, and irritable bowel syndrome. Muscle spasms from barium enemas, colonoscopy, and endoscopy are restrained by peppermint.

Peppermint is used orally in the form of tablets or tea to relieve respiratory conditions including coughing, colds, acute respiratory difficulties, and viral, fungal, and bacterial infections. To relieve irritated nasal passages, the oil can be inhaled. The oil can be applied to the chest to soothe respiratory discomfort and allergies

The aloe vera miracle: A natural medicine for cancer, cholesterol, diabetes, inflammation, IBS, and other health conditions

August 23rd, 2007

aloe vera

Monday, May 21, 2007 by: Mike Adams

I’m truly excited to be bringing you this information today about the miraculous healing abilities of aloe vera. First off, in case you don’t know, let me emphasize that I don’t sell aloe vera products of any kind, I haven’t been paid to write this article, and I don’t earn any commissions from the sale of any products mentioned here. I am, however, an enthusiastic supporter of natural medicine, and I personally grow and eat aloe vera plants in Tucson, Arizona.

In fact, my yard is an aloe farm, and each day before I make my superfood breakfast smoothie, I walk out to my yard, slice off an aloe vera leaf, thank the plant for granting me its healing medicine, then I fillet the leaf and drop the aloe vera gel into my blender. A few minutes later, I’m enjoying the most impressive medicinal herb that nature has ever created. (Click here to see the new PhotoTour showing step-by-step pictures of how to fillet aloe vera and remove the inner gel.)

When I say aloe vera is the most impressive medicinal herb invented by nature, I don’t make that statement lightly. Of all the herbs I’ve ever studied — and I’ve written thousands of articles on nutrition and disease prevention — aloe vera is the most impressive herb of them all. (Garlic would be a close second.) There is nothing on this planet that offers the amazing variety of healing benefits granted by aloe vera. In a single plant, aloe vera offers potent, natural medicine that:

• Halts the growth of cancer tumors.
• Lowers high cholesterol.
• Repairs “sludge blood” and reverses “sticky blood”.
• Boosts the oxygenation of your blood.
• Eases inflammation and soothes arthritis pain.
• Protects the body from oxidative stress.
• Prevents kidney stones and protects the body from oxalates in coffee and tea.
• Alkalizes the body, helping to balance overly acidic dietary habits.
• Cures ulcers, IBS, Crohn’s disease and other digestive disorders.
• Reduces high blood pressure natural, by treating the cause, not just the symptoms.
• Nourishes the body with minerals, vitamins, enzymes and glyconutrients.
• Accelerates healing from physical burns and radiation burns.
• Replaces dozens of first aid products, makes bandages and antibacterial sprays obsolete.
• Halts colon cancer, heals the intestines and lubricates the digestive tract.
• Ends constipation.
• Stabilizes blood sugar and reduces triglycerides in diabetics.
• Prevents and treats candida infections.
• Protects the kidneys from disease.
• Functions as nature’s own “sports drink” for electrolyte balance, making common sports drinks obsolete.
• Boosts cardiovascular performance and physical endurance.
• Speeds recovery from injury or physical exertion.
• Hydrates the skin, accelerates skin repair.

Truly, there is nothing else that compares to the medicinal potential of aloe vera. And yet most people only know about the topical applications of aloe vera gel. They think it’s only good for sunburns. In reality, aloe vera is useful for both external and internal use. In this article, I’ll discuss both.

Journey with me to the desert

To understand why aloe vera is so important, come with me to the deserts of Arizona. There, you’ll find an abundant diversity of plant life featuring impressive adaptations to living in a nearly water-free environment. Some of the trees, for example, have green bark and almost no leaves in order to reduce water loss. Small weeds have incredibly strong tap roots that thrust deep underground to find every last drop of moisture, and succulents have developed water storage techniques that capture water in an internal matrix of unique long-chain polysaccharides.

After a rain in the desert, you can actually watch the succulents swell to 130% their usual size as they take in water. During periods of drought, they slowly shrink back to normal as the excess water locked in their gel matrix is consumed.

It is these succulents we’re interested in here, and it’s only the inner gel that we’re focused on, because this inner gel has medicinal properties you’d be surprised to learn. For starters, there’s the fact that all succulents have self-repairing abilities. They don’t simply store water in a giant internal “water tank” that leaks out if torn or punctured: Their internal gel repairs any cut or tear by automatically shrinking the wound and creating a new water-tight seal. This gel matrix is comprised of hundreds of different phytochemicals that not only store water and repair injury; they also grant notable medicinal effects to humans who consume them.

Until now, there was only one good way to get aloe vera gel: Grow it yourself. I’ve done that for years, and when I’m making a smoothie, I often cut a large aloe vera leaf out of my yard, slice off the thick green skin of the leaf, and drop the large gel piece into a blender. You can see how this works in the aloe vera PhotoTour. The piece of aloe vera gel you see in the last picture is what I ate.

The reason I’m writing about aloe vera now is because a company I know here in Arizona called Good Cause Wellness (www.GoodCauseWellness.com) has launched a line of low-temperature dried aloe vera & berry products that you can use as ingredients in any smoothie. It’s the next best thing to growing your own fresh aloe vera leaves. It’s a high-grade, pesticide-free, highly concentrated aloe vera gel powder (just the gel, not the leaf) available in two mixtures: Aloe Vera + Raspberry Powder and Aloe Vera + Blueberry Powder. This makes aloe vera gel available to everyone, not just those who live in the desert.

You see, until now, I’ve been a strong proponent of the health benefits of aloe vera, but I had no advice for teaching others how to take the product. The typical aloe vera liquids available in retail are very weak, and some contain almost no aloe vera juice whatsoever. Many are mixed with food thickeners to make them look like a gel, but most have been heated, destroying a significant portion of their healing effects. This new aloe vera gel powder is the best form of aloe vera I’ve seen yet, and it’s in a convenient format that’s perfect for using in your own smoothies.

I’ll talk more about the products in a different article. Here, I’d like to focus on the substantial health benefits of aloe vera to let you see just why I’m so excited about the medicinal applications of this miracle plant.

Health benefits of aloe vera gel

What I’m about to offer here are my own opinion statements about aloe vera’s healing benefits. It’s interesting that if I were selling aloe vera myself, I could never make these true statements because the FDA would seize my inventory and shut me down for “selling unapproved drugs.” But I’m not in the aloe vera business, I’m in the business of helping people heal, and I will not censor the truth about the healing powers of aloe vera merely to appease a corrupt Food and Drug Administration that continues to censor and oppress information about the healing benefits of natural medicine.

Here’s what I know about aloe vera’s health benefits:

Aloe vera boosts immune function and destroys cancer tumors
Scientific research shows strong immunomodulatory and antitumour properties for aloe vera polysaccharides. That means the gel helps boosts immune system function while destroying cancer tumors. One study published in International Immunopharmacology (1995) showed that aloe vera polysaccharides exhibited potent macrophage-activating activities including producing increased volumes of nitric oxide (which has antitumor potential).

Click here to read more studies about aloe vera and cancer (Google Scholar).

Personally, I believe that anyone wishing to prevent or cure cancer should seriously investigate aloe vera as part of their recipe for eliminating cancer for life. I wouldn’t rely solely on aloe vera, especially since there are dozens of cancer cures that are now well known in naturopathic medicine. Combining the right herbs (like cat’s claw), superfoods (like spirulina), advanced therapies (like intravenous vitamin C), oxygen therapy and other modalities will give you the best results when battling any form of cancer. Work with a naturopathic physician to learn more.

Aloe vera halts inflammation
Using aloe topically is well known to ease inflammation of joints, reducing arthritis pain. But aloe can also be used internally, reducing inflammation throughout the body from the inside out. People who drink aloe vera for two weeks typically begin to experience a significant reduction of inflammation symptoms.

For a list of studies and references, click here.

Aloe vera enhances skin health
Aloe is one of the most widely-used ingredients in high-grade skin care products. There’s a reason for that: It’s great medicine for the skin! Aloe soothes the skin, hydrates it, nourishes it and accelerates the regeneration of new skin tissue. (In fact, simply removing the gel from a living aloe vera leaf and placing the raw gel on your face is far superior to even the most expensive eye cream or skin care product on the market.) And while most people are only familiar with using aloe vera externally, aloe also enhances skin health when used internally. Drink more aloe and your skin glows!

Click here for scientific studies and references.

Aloe vera stabilizes blood sugar in diabetics
Diabetic patients who take aloe vera for 3 months experience a significant drop in fasting blood sugar levels. They also exhibit lower cholesterol levels and slight improvements in total cholesterol. Numerous clinical studies have been published that demonstrate aloe vera’s antidiabetic properties.

Diabetics are also likely to benefit strongly from aloe vera’s blood enhancements (see below). Since aloe reverses “sludge blood” and boosts circulation to extremities, diabetics suffering from peripheral neuropathy (hands and feet going numb) are likely to benefit strongly from aloe vera supplements.

Click here for more science on aloe vera and diabetes.

Aloe vera lowers cholesterol and triglycerides
When used internally, aloe vera gel improves the quality of the blood and helps rebalance the blood chemistry in a way that lowers cholesterol and total triglycerides (in people with elevated levels). When you consider that blueberries are also powerful cholesterol-lowering medicines, you realize why the Good Cause Wellness Aloe Vera + Blueberry product is such a smart idea: Both ingredients lower high cholesterol! Plus, this is far safer than using statin drugs, which have extremely harmful negative side effects while depleting the body of nutrients such as CoQ10.

My advice to anyone on statin drugs is to strongly consider using high doses of aloe vera + blueberries to safety transition off statin drugs (all under the supervision of a naturopathic physician, of course). Aloe vera won’t kill you like statin drugs can, either. Aloe is completely safe to eat like a food. Given the cholesterol benefits of aloe and blueberries, statin drugs are actually obsolete. There are natural alternatives that are far safer, less expensive and more effective. Aloe vera is one of them.

Click here to read more articles on aloe vera and cholesterol.

Aloe vera relieves joint and muscle pain
This effect is directly related to the inflammation factor mentioned above. It works when used both internally and externally. Essentially, aloe reduces overall inflammation. Of course, is you continue eating a pro-inflammatory diet (red meat, milk, sugar, white flour, fried foods etc.) then you’ll never get rid of all your inflammation with aloe alone, but aloe can help ease your pain while you transition to a healthier lifestyle that eliminates the inflammation for good!

Aloe vera amplifies the antioxidant effects of vitamins
This is an especially interesting effect of aloe: It makes vitamin C, vitamin E and other antioxidants work better! It actually potentiates antioxidants, probably due to its effect on enhancing blood quality and allowing the blood to more effectively transport oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells. In fact, it is my belief that aloe vera makes everything nutritious work better due to its blood-enhancing effects. If I’m right about that, it means aloe can potentiate anti-cancer herbs, too, helping them more effectively target tumors.

Aloe vera actually contains advanced biochemical technology that the drug companies can only help to understand someday. This technology was built by nature, and it’s 100% compatible with the human body. All you have to do to experience this technology for yourself is eat aloe vera gel!
