Sniffles and Sneezes

July 31st, 2008

The only essential oils that I will use (highly diluted) on a baby’s skin are Lavender, German Chamomile, and Roman Chamomile. However, when baby has a stuffy nose, the gentle Eucalyptus Smithii can be diffused in his or her room or added to the humidifier. Please don’t expose the baby to any neat essential oils, and please don’t massage your baby with a eucalyptus blend. Eucalyptus, too close to the nose, can trigger a cough or choking response. Keep it diluted, and diffuse it in baby’s room, indirectly. When there are colds or viruses in the family, adding some Eucalyptus Smithii to water that you clean with, or diffusing it throughout the whole house can help prevent the spread of germs.

The Health Ranger’s South Florida Travel Journal: Medicated Drivers, MSG in Veggie Foods

July 31st, 2008

After mentioning the idea of a raw foods restaurant directory yesterday, a friend sent me an email with a link to exactly such a directory that already exists! It’s called www.VegGuide.org and you can use it to search for vegetarian, vegan or raw restaurants in most cities. Check it out to find these restaurants in your areas.

By the way, here’s a warning for you on “vegetarian” restaurants: Most vegetarian restaurants use veggie foods loaded with MSG. It’s true! Even they don’t know their foods contain MSG, either, and sometimes they will tell you, “We don’t add any MSG.” Well, sure, they don’t add the MSG… it’s already in there when they buy the veggie patties in the first place.

The really dangerous ingredient to watch out for is yeast extract — a hidden form of MSG found in virtually all processed vegetarian foods. Personally, I’d rather eat a bacon double cheeseburger than a “veggie” burger made with yeast extract (which includes virtually all popular veggie burger brands, by the way). Be sure to read the labels on these products to avoid yeast extract. There are a couple of brands that don’t use any hidden MSG, but you have to read the labels to find out which ones they are.

Are people Driving While Medicated? (DWM)

During my stay in South Florida, I’ve discovered something far more dangerous than hurricanes…

Medicated drivers!

A significant majority of the population here, you see, consists of people well over the age of sixty-five, and thanks to Big Pharma’s disease mongering efforts, virtually all of them are on five or ten different meds (they lost count, but I assure you, it’s a lot).

Now that’s fine if they just want to sit at home and drool on the couch while pretending to poke at the TV remote, but when they’re behind the wheel, it turns Florida’s roadways into an action-packed game of “Dodge Granny!”

These medicated elderly drivers, by the way, are mostly from New York or New Jersey, and they don’t decide to move to Florida until they’ve lost at least sixty percent of their vision and any ability to rotate their heads. That’s why they don’t actually bother to look around before backing out of a parking space or driveway… they can’t rotate their necks!

Disturbingly, even when their vision and their minds are long gone, they still retain the legal right to vote (they elected a Bush family member as their Governor, after all…), so that means any legislation that might require medicated elderly citizens to stay off the roads will never be passed in Florida. It’s like trying to get anti-smoking laws passed in North Carolina. Just ain’t gonna happen, folks! At least not in this generation…

It’s no joke that Driving While Medicated (DWM) is a huge problem in America today. It’s at least as bad as DUI (drinking and driving), and in many ways it’s actually worse because it’s a problem the establishment refuses to acknowledge.

While it’s relatively easy for a police officer to determine if someone is drunk, determining if someone is over-medicated is a lot more difficult. Why? Because encountering a driver suffering from a complete loss of cognitive function who drives like an idiot is so common today that it’s considered NORMAL!

Tip: I’ve noticed that people who slap those pink cancer ribbons on the backs of their vehicles tend to be the most medicated drivers on the road. So when you see a pink ribbon on a car, interpret that as a sign of danger (if not outright stupidity, too, given that cancer cures already exist, and there is no need to “search for the cure” as is promised by the fraudulent cancer industry).

Wonder of wonders… the sheets aren’t toxic!

Continuing my saga with the local hotel operator, my wife spoke to the hotel staff today about the fragrance issue, and they listened to her. (I sorta alienated the staff yesterday, so we decided to play good-cop, bad-cop this time around.) It worked! They delivered a brand-new set of sheets purchased just today. The problem, though, is that the pillow cases are still soaked in toxic laundry fragrance chemicals, but we already bought our own pillow cases to solve that problem, so everything’s cool.

Whole foods: Episode IV

I was back at the Whole Foods juice bar today, ordering up a tropical smoothie when I noticed a sign for a “Jay Robb whey protein boost.” Wow! That was cool to see Jay Robb being featured at whole foods (his company makes the most natural whey protein and egg protein products in the industry). See www.JayRobb.com

So of course, out of loyalty to the Jay Robb brand, I said to the guy behind the counter, “Hit me with some Jay Robb, dude!”

His reply? “Somebody took it.” Yep, somebody stole the Jay Robb whey protein out of the Whole Foods juice bar. (Is Jay aware this is happening?) So instead, I went with the Nutiva hemp protein, which is also groovy (www.Nutiva.com), and it’s better since I’m on a vegan diet now.

Yes, I bend the vegan rules a bit when traveling, so I’ll slug down some whey protein on the road, but at home I’m actually on the SunWarrior protein (www.SunWarrior.com) which is made from raw, fermented brown rice protein. It’s super smooth, and it tastes a whole lot better than hemp protein (which is kinda gritty…).

To use Florida terminology, I am a timeshare vegan, which means I’m vegan when it fits my schedule (which is most of the time now, by the way, but not when I’m on the road). When traveling, I’m merely vegetarian. In truly desperate situations (like at airports after a four-hour flight delay), I may even eat some seafood or fish, but that’s always a last resort. That would make me a pescetarian, I suppose, even though I actually prefer to call myself a freshetarian.

Speaking of the “tarians,” how about this one: The Vegeterranean Diet! That’s a Mediterranean Diet, but without the meat. It’s a super-healthy variation on the incredibly popular and well-researched Mediterranean Diet, which has been clinically proven to greatly reduce your risk of dying from cardiovascular events. Somebody should grab the domain name on this idea before it’s taken…

Clear water? Really?

The ocean water in Clearwater Beach, Florida is not clear. It’s muddy. But the ocean water in Boca Raton is really clear. It’s actually blue, and you can see fish swimming in the waves when walking along the beach. I think the name “Clearwater Beach” is false advertising. They should rename their town “Murkywater Beach.”

Aromatic Baby Powder

July 31st, 2008

For baby powder, you can easily make your own, out of a blend of cornstarch, arrowroot powder, and white cosmetic clay. You may either add a few drops of Lavender essential oil, or some finely pulverized dried lavender buds or dried rose petals. If you choose to use the essential oils, sprinkle the few drops it will take over the mixture of ‘powders’ and blend in with your finger tips, then sift well.If your baby has a red, angry diaper rash, it could very well be a yeast rash. If so, please don’t use the cornstarch or arrowroot, they can feed the yeast. A powder made of white cosmetic clay, with a few drops of Lavender essential oil blended in should sooth the sore bottom and help heal the rash.

FRUITFAST FRUIT SOFTGEL CAPSULES COMPARED TO FRUIT POWDER PILLS

Traditional Fruit Powder Pills are prepared by simply removing all available moisture and volatile natural solvents using a high vacuum extraction procedure. This results in a powder that has a high degree of hygroscopicity (water absorption character) that renders these powders incapable of full dissolution (the process of dissolving a substance into a liquid). After ingestion, the initial addition of moisture results in a high viscosity shell forming on the outside of the powder mass and essentially renders the remainder of the material incapable of being utilized because the cellular level phytochemicals can never become released and accessible to digestion and absorption.

FruitFast Softgels differ from traditional Fruit Powder Pills because they are not void of all the moisture and natural solvents. Due to the protection property afforded by the FruitFast production process, FruitFast Softgels are capable of delivering a full complement of phytochemicals under normal digestion conditions in a highly bio-available form.

We urge you to ask these companies for their Certificates Of Analysis, which are lab reports showing the analyte values of their capsules. Any reputable company has one. This is the only way to understand what is in the capsule you are buying. We publish Certificates Of Analysis for all of our Pomegranate, Blueberry and Cherry Softgel capsules.

Twelve Natural Health Tips for Smart Travel

July 31st, 2008

NaturalNews) Traveling can be hard on your health. Increased stress, changing time zones and difficulty finding healthy food can all negatively impact your health. And if you travel by air, you have the added problems of exposure to airborne pathogens, fragrance chemicals, and other pollutants brought into your air space by unhealthy people. On top of that, there’s the additional difficulty of bringing all your health supplements, superfoods and appliances with you (a Vita-Mix is heavy!).

So how can you protect yourself from sickness and environmental stress when traveling while still providing yourself with your most important health supplements and superfoods? Being an experienced traveler myself, I’ll share with you my best tips for maximizing your health when traveling on planes, trains or automobiles.

Tip #1: Boost your immune system before you go

Don’t dare walk into an airport, train station or other public place without protecting your immune system first. How do you accomplish that? It’s simple: For at least three days before your trip, start drinking lots of vegetable juice and taking immune-boosting herbal supplements. It’s even better if you’re drinking fresh juices every day as a regular habit, but if you’re not, at least kick in the healthful juices before you travel.

On the supplements side, I like to take Kyolic garlic supplements (www.Kyolic.com), medicinal mushrooms (www.MushroomScience.com), Echinacea, goldenseal, ginger and other similar immune herbs (www.BaselineNutritionals.com). It’s also important to get plenty of zinc in your diet by eating pumpkin seeds or taking high-quality zinc supplements. Taking lots of vitamin C and vitamin D3 is also helpful, but be sure to get them from high-quality supplements (I don’t recommend cheap multivitamins like the Centrum brand). The best sources for high-end individual supplements are www.WellnessResources.com and www.LivingFuel.com (check out their Super Essentials fish oils with astaxanthin.

Tip #2: Bring superfood powders for instant meals

Having superfood powders with you at all times is a great travel strategy, even if you’re just traveling to a relative’s house for a few days (your relatives probably aren’t as health conscious as you are, right?). Don’t clobber your immune system by eating the junk in their refrigerator; bring your own superfoods and amaze (or annoy) your friends and relatives with your own astonishing commitment to a truly healthful diet!

Which superfood products should you bring? There are a lot of them I recommend, including Living Fuel (www.LivingFuel.com), Boku Superfood (www.BokuSuperfood.com), Healthforce Nutritionals (www.HealthForce.com), HempShake (www.Nutiva.com), Emerald Balance (www.SGNnutrition.com) and Delicious Greens (www.Greens8000.com). There’s even a new product I just saw at Whole Foods called Amazing Meal (www.AmazingGrass.com). I haven’t tried it yet, but I know their Amazing Grass product is high quality, and I intend on reviewing their Amazing Meal product soon.

The point is to bring a lot of nutritious foods with you in a highly concentrated form. There’s no form more concentrated than dried superfood powders. Just add water, shake it up, and you’ve got a meal!

Tip #3: Bring a Blender Bottle to make instant superfood drinks

Speaking of shaking up your superfoods, you’ll need a clever way to accomplish that unless you’ve managed to bring a Vita-Mix (which I’ve been known to do, even on airplane trips). Far lighter than a Vita-Mix, the Blender Bottle (www.BlenderBottle.com) uses a stainless steel coil inside a plastic shaker bottle to deliver superfood smoothies that are almost as good as those you’d make in a blender.

The blender bottle is incredibly light, durable and easy to pack. I have one with me right now, and I shake up 3-4 superfood drinks each day with it. While it won’t blend up fruits and vegetables, it easily blends superfood powders (including protein powder). Don’t leave home without this cool device! (And by the way, I don’t mind the fact that it’s made out of plastic. I only use it when traveling. A little exposure to plastic from time to time is harmless, especially if you’re loading up with superfoods.)

Tip #4: Carefully choose your supplements, and bring them in plastic bottles, not glass

Speaking of glass, while I prefer to store nutritional products in glass bottles at home, when I’m on the road, I carry them in either plastic bottles or plastic bags. Yes, I don’t like plastic, either, but for traveling there’s simply no replacement. They’re light and virtually unbreakable. You don’t want to find glass shards in your suitcase after you claim it at baggage check do you?

Tip #5: Bring a gravity-fed countertop water filter (Brita, Pur, etc.)

A gravity-fed countertop water filter will let you “make” clean water just about anywhere. Just fill it up with your hotel’s tap water and wait for filtered water to appear in the container. This is the water you’ll use to make your superfoods.

Yes, I know: It’s not the best water in the world. If you want the best water, build a log cabin near an artesian well somewhere and drink your artesian water out of glass jars. But for those who need to travel, a countertop Brita filter will remove chlorine and other pollutants, giving you safe water to drink without forcing you to buy the hotel’s water (which is at least triple the cost of gasoline, by the way).

Brita water filters are incredibly light, too. You can even pack other gear inside them, such as your toothbrush, Dr. Bronner’s soap, and other personal care products.

The Benefits of Organic Soap

July 31st, 2008

It should come as no surprise that the majority of soaps that are sold in stores contain a large amount of chemicals that most of us have never even heard of. If you are concerned about the toxins that your family uses in your home, then you might want to consider switching to organic soap as a healthier alternative. By using organic soap, you can potentially avoid, or at least reduce, many common skin problems. Organic soap contains ingredients that have been produced without using herbicides, chemical fertilizers, or pesticides.

Commercial soaps are hard on regular skin, and worse if you have sensitive skin. The chemicals used to make and enhance their product and dry and damage skin. Regular soaps will remove naturally present glycerin and instead include harsh substances like dyes, synthetic fragrances and preservatives. Is it any wonder that some people are medically required to switch to natural soaps? Some of the possible skin conditions that may cause you to switch to natural soaps include, chronically dry skin, allergic reactions after a bath or an itch that scratching doesn’t seem to relieve.

Shopping for Organic Soap Products

You may have to do a little research to find the product suitable for you and your family. It’s definitely worth the effort. And, at the end of this article are a few recommendations from Dr. Group. When you’re shopping for your soaps, review labels closely, for the organic and natural ingredients.

Common organic ingredients you may find in organic soap include the following:

  • Organic Aloe
  • Organic Oats
  • Organic Peppermint
  • Organic Prickly Pear Cactus

Common natural ingredients you may find in organic soap include the following:

  • Cinnamon
  • Olive Oil
  • Goats Milk
  • Wild Carrot
  • Sea Salt
  • Essential Oils
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Sunflower Petals
  • Wild Horsemint
  • Wild Yucca Root
  • Moroccan Red Clay
  • Unrefined African Shea Butter

I have to tell you, when you’re going green by purchasing organic soap and other products for your family, you are also protecting the environment. Organic ingredients are traditionally grown without the use of chemicals, including pesticides that pollute our air, run into our water supplies, and become embedded in our soil. Instead, organic ingredients are harvested in a way that is actually beneficial to our entire ecosystem.¹

The vast majority of organic companies are now biodynamic, which is a holistic approach to coexisting with our environment. Biodynamic companies use our natural resources, and at the same time, do it respecting the needs of the living systems from which they draw.²

Organic Soap - Did You Know?

Did You Know?

Soaps commonly found on store shelves can actually be harmful to the environment, by presenting toxic waste into the water.

Organic producers are very careful not to disturb their surrounding natural resources, which is truly important for all of us. While this does result in higher product costs for organic soap, as well as other all natural products, you are only doing yourself, as well as our world, a great service by electing to support the efforts of organic companies.

The Benefits of Using Organic Soap Products

  • Organic soaps are generally not tested on animals. The all-natural organic substances in soap are easy on sensitive skin, and can soothe the reactions.
  • Natural & Organic soaps don’t cause the dry feeling that you can experience with commercial, non-organic soaps.
  • Organic soap products are made with natural, organic substances that don’t support chemical companies or GMO farmers. An investment in organic soap products is an investment in avoiding toxins harmful to your skin & to the environment.
  • Organic soap products will leave your skin feeling clean & moisturized, and give you the peace of mind to know that you’re doing a good thing for yourself & your family.
  • Reducing toxins in one area helps your overall living environment.

EPA Reduces Value of Human Life

July 31st, 2008

(NaturalNews) Were you aware that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regularly estimates the “value of statistical life?” Five years ago the EPA estimated the value of one human life to be $7.8 million and as of May, 2008 the estimation was $6.9 million for one human life. This is almost a $1 million decrease over the last five years.

Can we label this a simple bureaucratic calculation with little importance or might this devaluation have significant consequences for the American people?

When government agencies are constructing and writing regulations, they assign a value on human life and a part of the construction of legislation is to weigh associated costs against the lifesaving benefits of a proposed legislation.

Obviously, the less a life is deemed worth to the government, the less the need for any regulation to protect it. For example, the EPA refused to impose tighter restrictions on pollution recently. This basically puts off any action that might be taken on climate change indefinitely. It’s been whispered that the Bush administration has changed the value to avoid tougher regulations. The EPA denies this allegation.

This devaluation has alarmed Congress, however. The Senate environment committee and their chairman Barbara Boxer have stated that they will introduce legislation designed to reverse the recent move by the EPA.

“EPA may not think Americans are worth all that much, but the rest of us believe the value of an American life to our families, our communities, our workplaces and our nation is no less than it has ever been,” Stated Boxer.

Officials from the EPA state that they were following what current science showed them. The Value of Statistical Life figure is not based on the earning capacity of individuals or their potential contributions to society. These are factors commonly used in insurance claims and lawsuits. Instead, the value is calculated based on what individuals are willing to pay to avoid certain risks, and also on how much extra employers will pay their workers to take on additional risks.

Most of the data utilized is taken from payroll statistics. Some also comes from opinion surveys. The EPA cautions that people should not think of this number as a price tag on a life.

There are economists who don’t understand the reasoning behind the cut because as people become more successful and affluent, the value of statistical life should go up also. They should be connected. There has also been no studies performed that have shown that Americans are less willing to pay to reduce risk-taking.

Traditionally, the EPA has always put the highest value on life out of any government agency. They still do actually, despite efforts to use the same figure for all U.S. government agencies.

Are You Right or Left Brain Dominant?

July 31st, 2008

(NaturalNews) Research is continually showing that using your brain in news ways helps prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s. One way of knowing which parts of your brain is used most is to take this simple test that shows you if you are right or left brain dominant.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFV6h6MX…

Here are some general differences between people who are right brain and left brain dominant:

Left Brain Functions

* uses logic

* detail oriented

* facts rule

* words and language

* present and past

* math and science

* can comprehend

* knowing

* acknowledges

* order/pattern perception

* knows object name

* reality based

* forms strategies

* practical

* safe

Right Brain Functions

* uses feeling

* “big picture” oriented

* imagination rules

* symbols and images

* present and future

* philosophy & religion

* can “get it” (i.e. meaning)

* believes

* appreciates

* spatial perception

* knows object function

* fantasy based

* presents possibilities

* impetuous

* risk taking

In order for us to have full access to our full potential, we need to be able to access both sides of our brains. I was pleasantly surprised that with some effort, I could make the dancer spin in the other direction, which means that I am using the left side of my brain, which is normally more dormant.

The right brain left brain test can show us which part of our brain is most in need of some work, so that we can prevent brain shrinkage and dementia (provided we continue to eat a healthy diet of brain enhancing superfoods).

I actually really enjoy doing addition and math problems, as well as logic and sudoku puzzles. I try not to use a calculator when I need to do number crunching. I am sure that for me, who lives in the creative fantasy world of the right brain, this is particularly beneficial, and truly works my brain in the way that will prevent future illness and disease.

On the other hand, I am sure there are many left brained people who may benefit from doing creative activities, such as painting or poetry in order to work and expand their brain capacity.

Finding out which side of our brain is dominant is a good starting point for realising how our brain works, and how we can wake up other parts of our brains to not only prevent disease, but to live up to our full potential as human beings.

Imagine how much more full our lives will be if we are using every part of our brain. Einstein is a perfect example of someone who used both sides of his brain interchangeably. He was obviously incredibly scientific, logical, and math oriented, yet he was completely in touch with his intuition and right brain creativity.

He once said that “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” (Not a quote you would think of as coming from the typical left brain scientist.)

Unstuck: Your Guide to the Seven-Stage Journey Out of Depression

July 31st, 2008

Dr. Gordon is one of the pioneers in integrative medicine in the U.S. and has been advocating these principles for over thirty years.  He has respectable credentials as he graduated from Harvard Medical School and also served in the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and eventually wound up as the chairman of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

He is an unconventional psychiatrist who challenges the perceived wisdom on how depression is viewed and treated.  Over 200 million prescriptions are written every year in the U.S. alone, and he provides compelling evidence that these expensive and potentially deadly drugs are no more effective than placebos, and that many of the negative studies supporting this fact have never been published due to suppression by the drug companies.

He believes depression can be a wakeup call and the start of a journey that can help you become whole and happy.  He provides a comprehensive summary of the non-drug options that are available to those suffering from depression.

Surprisingly though, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is not included in his list.

This underlines what a major challenge it is to keep up in any area of health, because if one of the main pioneers in this area missed it, how easy would it be for the general lay public to miss it?

I recently interviewed Dr. Gordon for my inner circle membership program and when I asked him about EFT he mentioned that a few people had told him about it but he never investigated it. So with my encouragement he is starting that process, and will likely update future editions of Unstuck to include that information.

Dr. Gordon is also founder and director of the nonprofit Center for Mind Body Medicine in Washington D.C.  He has been able to share his training programs with about one third of the medical schools in the U.S. This is a major achievement, because if we fail to educate the new physicians in this paradigm, then we will lose the battle.

I am excited about Dr. Gordon’s work in this area and look forward to collaborating with him to see how we might work together in the future to continue to further educate new physicians.
