The addict feels low. His body needs a boost. He reaches into his pocket and finds a dollar bill. He slides it into the machine and a can rolls out. He opens the can and guzzles. He feels his energy return. His fix will last a couple of hours, enough to keep him alert for the rest of the morning. The addict is twelve years old and his drug is a soft drink, purchased from a vending machine in his school. This addict and thousands like him will attend special classes, sponsored by his school, to warn him about the dangers of drugs, tobacco and alcohol. But no one will tell him about America’s other drinking problem. more……
The Truth
A new report suggests that abnormal bacterial fermentation in the digestive system may cause the cramping, diarrhea, and excess flatulence associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
British researchers placed six healthy control women and six women with irritible bowel syndrome on an “exclusion” diet designed to eliminate foods suspected of causing IBS-like symptoms to collect data; excluded foods included: beef, dairy products, cereals other than rice; restricted foods included: yeast, citrus fruits, caffeinated beverages, and tap water.
Found that flatulence levels in the women with irratible bowel syndrome were significantly reduced after two weeks on the diet; no such improvement was seen in the healthy controls.
Authors say the findings suggest that the elimination of such fermentable substances from the diet of IBS patients can improve IBS-related symptoms and that they also support the feeling that diet-related bacterial fermentation plays an important role in the development of iritable bowel syndrome.

This warm pear soup is light and elegant. It’s the perfect way to dress up lovely fall pears. My husband called it “Divine!”
3 Tbsp. lemon juice
6 large pears (Comice, Anjou, Bartlett, etc. - just under-ripe is perfect because they’ll be firm enough to work with easily)
3 Tbsp. sunflower oil (or other mild flavored oil, such as safflower or canola, try Spectrum)
1 1/2 large shallots, minced (1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp.)
3 Tbsp. honey
3 cups organic vegetable broth
white pepper (black pepper will NOT do for this)
1 1/2 Tbsp. fresh chervil, finely minced
Creme Fraiche (try Bellwether Farms)
Put lemon juice in a bowl. Peel, core, and dice pears into 1-inch chunks, adding to the bowl and tossing them in lemon juice as you work, to prevent pears from turning brown. Heat sunflower oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add shallots and cook 2 minutes, stirring often. Add pears and drizzle with honey. Cook 10 minutes, stirring often. Transfer pears to a food processor and pulse. Pulsing will prevent them from overflowing. Once pears are almost smooth, run food processor about 1 minute until completely pureed. Return puree to pan, add broth and stir to combine thoroughly. Add a few turns of freshly ground white pepper, (or a couple pinches if it’s already ground). Stir in chervil. Heat soup to just below simmering point, do not boil. Remove from heat, ladle into bowls and top each with 1 Tbsp. creme fraiche. Swirl through soup gently. Makes 4-6 servings.

A chemical called triclosan poses a health risk, as it is a toxic compound which can promote cancer. The most shocking thing is that triclosan is commonly found in everyday consumer goods such as antibacterial soaps, deodorants, body washes, creams, lotions, cosmetics, cleaning supplies, detergents, dishwashing liquids, and yes, mouthwash and toothpaste. Toothpaste is supposed to help clean your…more….

History of regulation behind product warning delay
For years, Joshua Sharfstein shuddered whenever he walked down a drugstore aisle lined with cough and cold products for babies and toddlers.
“It never ceased to aggravate me,” said Sharfstein, a pediatrician and father of two young boys. “Kids with colds were getting these medicines that had never been shown to be either effective or safe.”
So when Sharfstein became Baltimore’s health commissioner, he launched a campaign that led an expert panel of the Food and Drug Administration to conclude last week that the products should not be used in children younger than 6, shocking many parents and setting up a possible clash between the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry, which is vowing to continue selling the products. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21483131/
