Peppermint

August 27th, 2007

Peppermint Today peppermint is grown in Europe and the U.S. It was originally found in London in 1750 and is a hybrid of spearmint and water mint. High oil content is found in the stems and leaves of the plant. These parts are used medicinally.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is often used for digestion purposes in oil form. The oil is also used to treat problems including cramps, gastritis, motion sickness, and irritable bowl syndrome.

The gastrointestinal tract is often relieved by peppermint as it relaxes the intestinal wall’s muscles. As it increases saliva, swallowing increases and relieves cramps, improves appetite, and relieves pain from motion sickness, nausea, and irritable bowel syndrome. Muscle spasms from barium enemas, colonoscopy, and endoscopy are restrained by peppermint.

Peppermint is used orally in the form of tablets or tea to relieve respiratory conditions including coughing, colds, acute respiratory difficulties, and viral, fungal, and bacterial infections. To relieve irritated nasal passages, the oil can be inhaled. The oil can be applied to the chest to soothe respiratory discomfort and allergies

The Dangerous Truth about Herbal Colon Cleansers

Health-conscious consumers are more than willing to spend valuable time and money on natural means of maintaining their health. And many of these consumers subscribe to the philosophy that good health begins in the bowels.

As a result, the natural health supplement industry has recently been flooded with numerous infomercials on natural health, herbal colon cleansers, and detoxifiers. They may be natural, but are they really effective? And more importantly, does buying “natural” necessarily mean buying safe?

According to the National Library of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health, and similar organizations, many herbal colon cleansers could be more than just ineffective. They could be putting consumer health at serious risk.

While there are a handful of safe herbal cleansing products on the market, most manufacturers choose to include cheap and potentially dangerous ingredients in their formulations. Popular herbal ingredients to be especially wary of include Psyllium, Cascara Sagrada, and Senna.

A lot of other potentially dangerous herb combinations make their way into herbal cleansers, so be sure to research each individual ingredient in any herbal cleanser before putting it into your body.

A better option would be to choose a non-herbal cleansing product with a well-documented safety record. In addition to being more effective than their herbal counterparts, oxygen-based cleansers, such as Oxy-Powder®, are much gentler on the digestive tract and carry virtually no reported health risks.

Psyllium

Psyllium is one of the most common herbal ingredients used in colon cleansers and especially in over-the-counter fiber laxatives. There have been numerous reports of serious allergic reactions following the ingestion of psyllium products. These reactions include labored breathing, skin irritations or hives, and potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis. Long-term use of products containing psyllium may also negatively affect absorption of certain essential vitamins and minerals including iron.

Perhaps most ironically, obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract has also been regularly cited in studies of patients taking psyllium products. These studies seem to suggest this problem is especially common in individuals who are prone to suffering constipation.
Oxygen cleansers, on the other hand, actually convert solid waste into a gas or liquid which makes it impossible for them to cause any sort of intestinal blockage. And because oxygen cleansers are usually made from magnesium compounds, they can help reintroduce some of the essential minerals that Psyllium cleansers strip away.

It’s difficult to comprehend why any intelligent person would purchase a “bowel cleansing” product with a tendency to cause bowel obstruction or constipation rather than a safe, proven oxygen cleanser.

Cascara Sagrada

The name Cascara sagrada is used generically to describe the aged bark of several species of Buckthorn shrub. It’s used as a key component in many colon cleansing products.

Some supplement marketers attempt to sell Cascara under the radar by disguising it as part of a “proprietary blend” or by listing it as less easily recognized “buckthorn bark.” These same companies will sometimes make fine-print disclaimers about their products containing this dangerous ingredient, presumably to protect themselves against potential lawsuits. It’s unfortunate they’re not so willing to protect the health of their customers.

In 2002, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned cascara and its derivatives from use in non-prescription laxatives due to lack of supportive evidence they were either safe or effective. The FDA however failed to protect consumers from manufacturers who include cascara in “dietary supplements.”

Oxygen cleansers like Oxy-Powder® are made from minerals instead of plant byproducts, which means they carry a significantly lower risk of of contamination and have a more predictable effect on the body than cleansers made with Cascara or other herbs.

Senna

Senna is produced from a tropical flowering plant and is a popular ingredient in “diet” or “cleansing” teas as well as body cleansing supplements. Senna has also been the subject of numerous consumer complaints stretching as far back as 1987.

Between 1992 and 1994, there were at least four recorded deaths of otherwise healthy young females who reportedly used senna-containing teas for extended periods. However, further investigation in these cases was unable to yield sufficient evidence to ban the substance, at least for the time being.

Both Cascara and Senna are forms of Anthraquinones–naturally occurring compounds are found primarily in plants and select insects. In addition to their newfound popularity as ingredients in dietary cleansers, they have historically been used in the commercial manufacturing of dyes and pigments.

Anthraquinones work with intestinal bacteria to cause bowel contractions. According to the National Institutes of Health, common side effects of Anthraquinone-based stimulant laxatives include brownish urine, severe abdominal cramping, diarrhea and vomiting. They also have a tendency to strip away good bacteria which normally assist the body’s digestive process, from the intestines.

If abused, Anthraquinones can also cause electrolyte imbalances and potassium loss, and because electrolytes play an essential role in creating nerve impulses that help to facilitate proper muscle function, unbalanced potassium levels can trigger irregular heartbeat and other potentially life-threatening conditions.

What to Look For Before Buying an Herbal Colon Cleanser

The majority of herbs used in these products are sourced from countries like China or India and, in order to turn a profit, these companies are using very low grade herb powders or solvent extracted herbal derivatives which may be contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, insecticides and other toxins. In most cases herbs are also irradiated when shipped internationally, which tends to greatly reduce their effectiveness.

Make sure you ask any company from which you purchase cleansing supplements if they have documentation regarding the source of their herbs and a certificate stating that their product is free of herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, heavy metals, fumigants and also contains non-irradiated ingredients. Also try to make sure they use pure vegetable capsules, as opposed to those manufactured with toxic glues and binders, or gelatin capsules with animal-source byproducts and toxic preservatives.

It’s a good idea to avoid cleansers that contain questionable or hard-to-digest non-nutritive substances such as magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide (common sand), food glaze, methylcellulose, carnauba wax, apple pectin or any other “flow” agent or filler. Ideally, all of the ingredients utilized in a natural colon cleanser should be organically certified, wildcrafted, or at the very least, free of harmful contaminates.

A Better, Safer Option

While the facts surrounding herbal cleansers may seem disheartening to consumers seeking natural options for maintaining their health, safe alternatives are readily available. Unlike herbal or other over-the-counter laxatives, oxygen-based cleansers thoroughly cleanse the walls of the colon and intestines without dangerous or unpleasant side effects.

There are several reputable options for oxygen cleansing, but Oxy-Powder® is considered to be the best. It works by releasing nascent oxygen (ozone) into the bowel using a magnesium carrier. Simply put, specialized oxygen molecules are locked in place by being bonded to specific forms of magnesium. Gastric juices breakdown these bonds and allow the oxygen to escape into the intestines where it gently breaks up lingering waste.

Oxy-Powder® has several other notable advantages over other cleansers. In addition to fully utilizing modern technology in its manufacturing and development, Oxy-Powder® also boasts a stronger formula in lab testing than other products,   and it comes in a convenient vegetarian capsule (unlike many other oxygen cleansers which come as a loose powder and must be mixed with water).

This information is in no way meant to dissuade consumers from using natural herb-based health products. In most cases, natural supplements are a great alternative to synthetic drugs, and herbs are about as natural as it gets. But they can be just as potent (and potentially dangerous) as pharmaceuticals. So please, do yourself and your body a favor and thoroughly research any herbal cleansing product before adding it to your diet.

The aloe vera miracle: A natural medicine for cancer, cholesterol, diabetes, inflammation, IBS, and other health conditions

aloe vera

Monday, May 21, 2007 by: Mike Adams

I’m truly excited to be bringing you this information today about the miraculous healing abilities of aloe vera. First off, in case you don’t know, let me emphasize that I don’t sell aloe vera products of any kind, I haven’t been paid to write this article, and I don’t earn any commissions from the sale of any products mentioned here. I am, however, an enthusiastic supporter of natural medicine, and I personally grow and eat aloe vera plants in Tucson, Arizona.

In fact, my yard is an aloe farm, and each day before I make my superfood breakfast smoothie, I walk out to my yard, slice off an aloe vera leaf, thank the plant for granting me its healing medicine, then I fillet the leaf and drop the aloe vera gel into my blender. A few minutes later, I’m enjoying the most impressive medicinal herb that nature has ever created. (Click here to see the new PhotoTour showing step-by-step pictures of how to fillet aloe vera and remove the inner gel.)

When I say aloe vera is the most impressive medicinal herb invented by nature, I don’t make that statement lightly. Of all the herbs I’ve ever studied — and I’ve written thousands of articles on nutrition and disease prevention — aloe vera is the most impressive herb of them all. (Garlic would be a close second.) There is nothing on this planet that offers the amazing variety of healing benefits granted by aloe vera. In a single plant, aloe vera offers potent, natural medicine that:

• Halts the growth of cancer tumors.
• Lowers high cholesterol.
• Repairs “sludge blood” and reverses “sticky blood”.
• Boosts the oxygenation of your blood.
• Eases inflammation and soothes arthritis pain.
• Protects the body from oxidative stress.
• Prevents kidney stones and protects the body from oxalates in coffee and tea.
• Alkalizes the body, helping to balance overly acidic dietary habits.
• Cures ulcers, IBS, Crohn’s disease and other digestive disorders.
• Reduces high blood pressure natural, by treating the cause, not just the symptoms.
• Nourishes the body with minerals, vitamins, enzymes and glyconutrients.
• Accelerates healing from physical burns and radiation burns.
• Replaces dozens of first aid products, makes bandages and antibacterial sprays obsolete.
• Halts colon cancer, heals the intestines and lubricates the digestive tract.
• Ends constipation.
• Stabilizes blood sugar and reduces triglycerides in diabetics.
• Prevents and treats candida infections.
• Protects the kidneys from disease.
• Functions as nature’s own “sports drink” for electrolyte balance, making common sports drinks obsolete.
• Boosts cardiovascular performance and physical endurance.
• Speeds recovery from injury or physical exertion.
• Hydrates the skin, accelerates skin repair.

Truly, there is nothing else that compares to the medicinal potential of aloe vera. And yet most people only know about the topical applications of aloe vera gel. They think it’s only good for sunburns. In reality, aloe vera is useful for both external and internal use. In this article, I’ll discuss both.

Journey with me to the desert

To understand why aloe vera is so important, come with me to the deserts of Arizona. There, you’ll find an abundant diversity of plant life featuring impressive adaptations to living in a nearly water-free environment. Some of the trees, for example, have green bark and almost no leaves in order to reduce water loss. Small weeds have incredibly strong tap roots that thrust deep underground to find every last drop of moisture, and succulents have developed water storage techniques that capture water in an internal matrix of unique long-chain polysaccharides.

After a rain in the desert, you can actually watch the succulents swell to 130% their usual size as they take in water. During periods of drought, they slowly shrink back to normal as the excess water locked in their gel matrix is consumed.

It is these succulents we’re interested in here, and it’s only the inner gel that we’re focused on, because this inner gel has medicinal properties you’d be surprised to learn. For starters, there’s the fact that all succulents have self-repairing abilities. They don’t simply store water in a giant internal “water tank” that leaks out if torn or punctured: Their internal gel repairs any cut or tear by automatically shrinking the wound and creating a new water-tight seal. This gel matrix is comprised of hundreds of different phytochemicals that not only store water and repair injury; they also grant notable medicinal effects to humans who consume them.

Until now, there was only one good way to get aloe vera gel: Grow it yourself. I’ve done that for years, and when I’m making a smoothie, I often cut a large aloe vera leaf out of my yard, slice off the thick green skin of the leaf, and drop the large gel piece into a blender. You can see how this works in the aloe vera PhotoTour. The piece of aloe vera gel you see in the last picture is what I ate.

The reason I’m writing about aloe vera now is because a company I know here in Arizona called Good Cause Wellness (www.GoodCauseWellness.com) has launched a line of low-temperature dried aloe vera & berry products that you can use as ingredients in any smoothie. It’s the next best thing to growing your own fresh aloe vera leaves. It’s a high-grade, pesticide-free, highly concentrated aloe vera gel powder (just the gel, not the leaf) available in two mixtures: Aloe Vera + Raspberry Powder and Aloe Vera + Blueberry Powder. This makes aloe vera gel available to everyone, not just those who live in the desert.

You see, until now, I’ve been a strong proponent of the health benefits of aloe vera, but I had no advice for teaching others how to take the product. The typical aloe vera liquids available in retail are very weak, and some contain almost no aloe vera juice whatsoever. Many are mixed with food thickeners to make them look like a gel, but most have been heated, destroying a significant portion of their healing effects. This new aloe vera gel powder is the best form of aloe vera I’ve seen yet, and it’s in a convenient format that’s perfect for using in your own smoothies.

I’ll talk more about the products in a different article. Here, I’d like to focus on the substantial health benefits of aloe vera to let you see just why I’m so excited about the medicinal applications of this miracle plant.

Health benefits of aloe vera gel

What I’m about to offer here are my own opinion statements about aloe vera’s healing benefits. It’s interesting that if I were selling aloe vera myself, I could never make these true statements because the FDA would seize my inventory and shut me down for “selling unapproved drugs.” But I’m not in the aloe vera business, I’m in the business of helping people heal, and I will not censor the truth about the healing powers of aloe vera merely to appease a corrupt Food and Drug Administration that continues to censor and oppress information about the healing benefits of natural medicine.

Here’s what I know about aloe vera’s health benefits:

Aloe vera boosts immune function and destroys cancer tumors
Scientific research shows strong immunomodulatory and antitumour properties for aloe vera polysaccharides. That means the gel helps boosts immune system function while destroying cancer tumors. One study published in International Immunopharmacology (1995) showed that aloe vera polysaccharides exhibited potent macrophage-activating activities including producing increased volumes of nitric oxide (which has antitumor potential).

Click here to read more studies about aloe vera and cancer (Google Scholar).

Personally, I believe that anyone wishing to prevent or cure cancer should seriously investigate aloe vera as part of their recipe for eliminating cancer for life. I wouldn’t rely solely on aloe vera, especially since there are dozens of cancer cures that are now well known in naturopathic medicine. Combining the right herbs (like cat’s claw), superfoods (like spirulina), advanced therapies (like intravenous vitamin C), oxygen therapy and other modalities will give you the best results when battling any form of cancer. Work with a naturopathic physician to learn more.

Aloe vera halts inflammation
Using aloe topically is well known to ease inflammation of joints, reducing arthritis pain. But aloe can also be used internally, reducing inflammation throughout the body from the inside out. People who drink aloe vera for two weeks typically begin to experience a significant reduction of inflammation symptoms.

For a list of studies and references, click here.

Aloe vera enhances skin health
Aloe is one of the most widely-used ingredients in high-grade skin care products. There’s a reason for that: It’s great medicine for the skin! Aloe soothes the skin, hydrates it, nourishes it and accelerates the regeneration of new skin tissue. (In fact, simply removing the gel from a living aloe vera leaf and placing the raw gel on your face is far superior to even the most expensive eye cream or skin care product on the market.) And while most people are only familiar with using aloe vera externally, aloe also enhances skin health when used internally. Drink more aloe and your skin glows!

Click here for scientific studies and references.

Aloe vera stabilizes blood sugar in diabetics
Diabetic patients who take aloe vera for 3 months experience a significant drop in fasting blood sugar levels. They also exhibit lower cholesterol levels and slight improvements in total cholesterol. Numerous clinical studies have been published that demonstrate aloe vera’s antidiabetic properties.

Diabetics are also likely to benefit strongly from aloe vera’s blood enhancements (see below). Since aloe reverses “sludge blood” and boosts circulation to extremities, diabetics suffering from peripheral neuropathy (hands and feet going numb) are likely to benefit strongly from aloe vera supplements.

Click here for more science on aloe vera and diabetes.

Aloe vera lowers cholesterol and triglycerides
When used internally, aloe vera gel improves the quality of the blood and helps rebalance the blood chemistry in a way that lowers cholesterol and total triglycerides (in people with elevated levels). When you consider that blueberries are also powerful cholesterol-lowering medicines, you realize why the Good Cause Wellness Aloe Vera + Blueberry product is such a smart idea: Both ingredients lower high cholesterol! Plus, this is far safer than using statin drugs, which have extremely harmful negative side effects while depleting the body of nutrients such as CoQ10.

My advice to anyone on statin drugs is to strongly consider using high doses of aloe vera + blueberries to safety transition off statin drugs (all under the supervision of a naturopathic physician, of course). Aloe vera won’t kill you like statin drugs can, either. Aloe is completely safe to eat like a food. Given the cholesterol benefits of aloe and blueberries, statin drugs are actually obsolete. There are natural alternatives that are far safer, less expensive and more effective. Aloe vera is one of them.

Click here to read more articles on aloe vera and cholesterol.

Aloe vera relieves joint and muscle pain
This effect is directly related to the inflammation factor mentioned above. It works when used both internally and externally. Essentially, aloe reduces overall inflammation. Of course, is you continue eating a pro-inflammatory diet (red meat, milk, sugar, white flour, fried foods etc.) then you’ll never get rid of all your inflammation with aloe alone, but aloe can help ease your pain while you transition to a healthier lifestyle that eliminates the inflammation for good!

Aloe vera amplifies the antioxidant effects of vitamins
This is an especially interesting effect of aloe: It makes vitamin C, vitamin E and other antioxidants work better! It actually potentiates antioxidants, probably due to its effect on enhancing blood quality and allowing the blood to more effectively transport oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells. In fact, it is my belief that aloe vera makes everything nutritious work better due to its blood-enhancing effects. If I’m right about that, it means aloe can potentiate anti-cancer herbs, too, helping them more effectively target tumors.

Aloe vera actually contains advanced biochemical technology that the drug companies can only help to understand someday. This technology was built by nature, and it’s 100% compatible with the human body. All you have to do to experience this technology for yourself is eat aloe vera gel!

The Killing of California Almonds (and why dead foods lead to dead people)

August 22nd, 2007

almonds

As NewsTarget reported earlier this year, the Almond Board of California (ABC) has decided that all almonds grown in that state must be pasteurized, irradiated or otherwise killed, even when they’re labeled “raw.” This is necessary, the ABC tells us, for “safety reasons.” But who’s safety? Certainly not the safety of the consumer, since dead or cooked nuts are far less nutritious than living, raw nuts. It turns out the focus is on the safety of the industry, and killing all the almonds before allowing them to be sold to consumers is a way to insulate the almond industry from lawsuits stemming from rare salmonella outbreaks that afflict a tiny number of consumers with compromised immune systems.

So rather than take the risk that a few raw almonds might occasionally be contaminated and harm a few individuals, the industry believes that it’s better to harm everyone equally by making sure all almonds are pasteurized or irradiated, rendering them nutritionally deficient. Or, to put it another way, the industry will knowingly put out a nutritionally inferior product to the masses in exchange for a little legal immunity of its own.

Of course, the Almond Board of California knows virtually nothing about nutrition and so does not even acknowledge any difference between raw almonds and dead almonds. It makes me wonder if the board is, itself, occupied by expired persons that the few remaining living members simply haven’t bothered to remove. They seem incapable of distinguishing between living organisms and dead ones, after all. And yet the differences are tremendous: Cooked almonds have most of their natural phytonutrients destroyed by excess heat (or radiation). Protein content is diminished, fats are molecularly altered and sugars are broken down into less healthy forms. All this seems to be of no concern to the ABC, which remains convinced that cooked, dead almonds are virtually identical to raw almonds in taste, texture and nutrition.

Many almond growers, not surprisingly, are hopping mad at the ABC for this “pasteurization tyranny” that will now require almond growers to kill a perfectly good product before they can sell it to consumers. It’s almost like being in the flower business and, after growing beautiful orchids for your customers, some stupid state agency comes along and says you have to cook all the flowers before you can sell them because somebody once stuck their nose in a pot of orchids and sniffed up a creepy crawler. Cooked orchids, alas, are not nearly as beautiful as living orchids.

But the ABC will hear none of it. They’re determined to kill their almonds, even if it means compromising the integrity of the entire industry due to the planned false labeling that would classify dead almonds as “raw.” Starting in September, when consumers pick up a bag of “raw almonds” at a health food store, they have no way of knowing if those almonds are actually raw, or if they’re just pretend raw because the ABC voted to have them pasteurized (cooked) and then labeled as raw. Virtually all almonds sold in North America are grown in California, by the way. This ruling therefore impacts the whole industry.

The ABC does not even seem committed to honest labeling. If the almonds are to be pasteurized, shouldn’t they be labeled, “Pasteurized”? It seems stubbornly dishonest to cook all the almonds while labeling them “raw.” It’s an insult to the consumer, too, but it’s also par for the course when it comes to food safety: The FDA, after all, insists that both irradiated foods and GMO foods should not be labeled as such because the labels might “confuse consumers.” That’s right: Too much information is dangerous to consumers! Knowledge might cause them to make the wrong purchasing decision!

As a consumer, I’ve never felt so insulted in my entire life. Except, perhaps, for the one time a radio show host accidentally called me a doctor.

Singling out almonds

Certainly, there have been a handful of deaths due to salmonella poisoning from raw almonds. To put this in perspective, so what? Over 16,000 people died last year from drunk driving, and I don’t see the feds banning cars. Over 100,000 Americans died from pharmaceuticals, and yet those remain heavily advertised everywhere. Countless millions of children have died over the years from cancers stemming from chemical food additives like sodium nitrite, hydrogenated oils and petrochemical food coloring, yet you don’t see anybody jumping up and down to save those kids. But when five people croak from eating raw almonds, they treat it like it’s a national emergency. Maybe terrorists are now using salmonella as a biological weapon…

But let’s get real here: Eating food comes with some risk. You can die from salmonella poisoning in alfalfa sprouts, too, if you have a really weak immune system, or you could keel over from eating raw sushi at the local Japanese diner. You might croak after drinking a gallon of raw milk that went really, really bad, or you could buy the farm after eating a salad contaminated by salmonella from the knife you used to slice that contaminated chicken (70% of store-bought raw chicken meat is contaminated with salmonella, did you know?). These are inherent risks in life. Food sometimes kills you, and even when it doesn’t, you sometimes get diarrhea so bad that you wish it had.

The defense against food poisoning is to have a healthy immune system and a really healthy population of friendly flora in your gut. These two things can protect you against almost any common food-borne organisms. And yet so many Americans are diseased, immunosuppressed and intestinally imbalanced (due to rampant use of antibiotics) that the authorities have decided the only way to deliver safe food is to sterilize it first. Sure, sterilization sounds like a great idea if applied to certain politicians, but it’s probably not such a smart move for our food supply. (It works for the news, however. Just about every piece of news on the war in Iraq is sterilized before being broadcast to Americans…)

But why single out almonds in the first place? Spinach has been contaminated with e.coli, and so have numerous other fresh foods (onions, parsley, lettuce, etc.). Will our ever-so-vigilant government now come along and kill all those foods, too? Shall we have a dinner of wilted lettuce, dead almond slices and pasteurized salad dressing made with rape seed oil, MSG and high-fructose corn syrup? That’s the food the government will put its stamp of approval on, it seems: Dead, deficient and dirt cheap.

Here’s where all this is going…

The bigger picture: Dead foods lead to dead peopleI have heard a theory that says the governments of the world, concerned with the population carrying capacity of planet Earth, have unleashed a plan to greatly reduce the population by destroying the nutritional value of foods and supplements. Once malnutrition becomes rampant, the theory goes, the population will collapse through disease and infertility, and the remaining few will find themselves in a happy, low-population world where they can actually afford to buy a condo.

I’m not sure I totally believe this plan, but some of what’s happening with CODEX Alimentarius sure seems suspicious (as in, why would they make therapeutic doses of vitamins illegal, anyway?). On the other hand, if world leaders really wanted to kill everyone, they could just force the population to watch endless reruns of televised speeches from President Bush, and that would drive countless voters to kill themselves far more quickly.

But suppose the theories have an element of truth? Mandating the killing of fresh foods would certainly be an effective way to accelerate the diseasification and death of the population. It’s also a great cover story: “We’re killing all your food to HELP you! Because we care!”

I suspect, however, that the real explanation here is nothing more complicated than mass incompetence by the ABC, USDA, FDA and just about every government agency with 3 or 4 letters. Real knowledge about the nutritional value of living foods remains disturbingly rare. Conventional medicine still hasn’t even accepted the idea that the human body has any real nutritional needs whatsoever (except, perhaps, for basic synthetic vitamins to prevent rickets and pellagra). Medical doctors still aren’t taught nutrition in med school, and the whole raw foods movement is only starting to gain mainstream momentum. Sure, in twenty years, most people will understand there’s a huge difference between living foods and dead foods, but right now, most health authorities and consumers are stuck in the world of immutable macronutrients that have no “living” properties whatsoever.

Whether you believe that the plan to destroy the nutritional value of the food supply is due to widespread incompetence or some evil plot to reduce the human population by nutritionally starving the masses, one thing remains inarguably true: Each year, more and more of your food is getting irradiated, pasteurized, homogenized, milled, processed, steam treated, dipped, bleached or otherwise altered. The result is that mainstream food is less nutritious with each passing year, and that doesn’t even consider the mass mineral depletion of the soils that further contributes to the nutritional deficiency of foods.

It all comes back to the same fundamentals: If you want to be a healthy person, you’ll need to source real food grown by real people who live real close by. Buy local. Support Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) organizations (www.LocalHarvest.org). Visit local farmer co-ops, and grow what you can in your own garden. Buy organic, and research the companies you’re buying from. Know what you’re putting in your mouth before chewing and swallowing.

After all, there are health authorities who are working hard right now to make sure that every bite you take has been sterilized for your own protection. Living matter may soon no longer allowed to be consumed by the public. Gee, isn’t it nice to know the authorities are looking out for our welfare yet again? I think we should all send kind letters to the Almond Board of California, thanking them for making our food purchasing decisions so simple that even complete idiots can now eat themselves into a state of sustained malnourishment without giving it a second thought.

It is a fascinating sign of the times when the authorities in charge of the food supply seem dead set on making foods as nutritionally worthless as possible.
